I decided to try my hand at a tomato plant this year…..this was a new adventure. I typically have a brown thumb, but decided if I could get flowers to grow then surely I could grow tomatoes. I put my starter plant in a pot around the middle of May and watched it grow to about 4 foot tall. It bloomed a lot of little flowers, which I assumed were potential tomatoes, but nothing happened. A friend told me it wasn’t pollinating so I googled ‘what to do when your tomato plant isn’t producing” and was told to shake the plant. Okay, first I have to tell you it sits on my front porch, I am sure my neighbors think the new family is a little nuts, but I went out several days in a row and shook that thing as hard as I could and waited. Nothing happened so I figured I had made a fool out of myself for nothing………until today when I looked out the front window and there it was, my first tomato.
It is about an inch or so in size, but I just know it is going to be the biggest, juiciest tomato I have ever eaten. I am also having faith that many more will begin to grow.
The moral of this story is patience and no matter what you might look like to your neighbors if the instructions on the internet say shake your tomato plant, then shake it!
